Carpet Pythons as Pets - How to look after your Carpet Python
Many people now have carpet pythons as pets. These snakes have
certain requirements that must be met. Here are a few factors to keep in
mind when caring for your carpet pythons.
Temperature
It is recommended that the temperature is kept between 24-27degC. The
temperature near the basking lamp should be between 31-33 degC. These are
not exact requirements but rather a general guideline.
Cooling
During the winter time adults should have basking temps around 31-33
degC during daylight hours. During night hours, you can even turn the
heat off and let is get as low as 18 degC.
Humidity
Some have stated that the humidity should be around 70 % - 80%.
Again, this should be considered a guideline only because other snake
owners have said that this is not necessary. You probably don't need
constant humidity. Tis tends to cause respiratory problems. You just
need to create a humidity cycle.
Diet
Some carpet python owners have recommended staring the snake out on
rat pinkies. The frequency of meals will probably vary but these snakes
can eat big meals. Because of that, you can try giving them meals that
others might consider too large. After the meal, if they are not
disturbed for a few days and they have enough heat, they can digest the
meal with no problems.
Feeding
In most cases, carpet pythons are big eaters. On the other hand,
hatchlings can be picky eaters. If that is the case, they will usually
be picky eaters as adults. Hatchling carpet pythons usually like eating
prey that is the same size as a hopper mouse. Even though this may
appear to be a large meal, they can handle it. If some of the baby
pythons are having difficulty eating, in most cases as assist feeding
will do the trick.
